Fred Dixon Comes Home: Returns to Lead New York City Tourism + Conventions

By Ariel Ferrero

After more than two years leading Brand USA, one of the most prominent figures in the U.S. tourism industry will return on December 1 to the organization he headed for a decade. Dixon will once again take on the mission of strengthening New York City’s position among the world’s leading destinations.

New York City is bringing back one of the executives who helped build its extraordinary global tourism brand. Fred Dixon will return as President and CEO of New York City Tourism + Conventions effective December 1, a little more than two years after leaving the organization to lead Brand USA.

The return carries considerable symbolism. Dixon spent much of his professional career within New York City’s official destination marketing organization and served as its chief executive for a decade, when it was known as NYC & Company, before its rebrand as New York City Tourism + Conventions in 2023.

During his previous tenure, Dixon worked alongside three mayoral administrations — Michael Bloomberg, Bill de Blasio and Eric Adams — and helped steer New York City’s tourism industry through one of the greatest challenges in its history: the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent recovery of a sector vital to the city’s economy.

Dixon will succeed Julie Coker, who left New York City Tourism + Conventions in June to become President and CEO of Visit California. Until Dixon takes office, Board Chairman Charles Flateman will continue overseeing the organization alongside its executive leadership team.

“Returning to New York City Tourism + Conventions and the city I love is an extraordinary honor,” Dixon said following the announcement. He also emphasized his commitment to strengthening New York City’s global position and ensuring that tourism growth continues to benefit communities across all five boroughs.

From New York to Brand USA — and Back Home

Dixon left the New York organization in 2024 to become President and CEO of Brand USA, the organization responsible for promoting the United States as an international travel destination.

His tenure coincided with a particularly challenging period for U.S. tourism promotion. Federal matching funds available to Brand USA were reduced from $100 million to $20 million, an 80% cut that forced the organization to make significant adjustments.

Brand USA confirmed that Dixon will remain in his current position through November 13 to support the transition and that a search for his successor will begin.

His return also comes at an important moment for U.S. tourism. While the United States continues to face challenges in fully recovering some international visitor markets, New York City has demonstrated the enduring strength of its global destination brand.

New York City Remains a Global Tourism Powerhouse

New York City welcomed approximately 65 million visitors in 2025, the second-highest total in its history. Those visitors generated approximately $55.6 billion in direct spending, supported nearly 400,000 tourism-related jobs and contributed more than $7 billion in tax revenue.

The figures once again underline tourism’s role as one of the economic engines of the five boroughs and demonstrate New York City’s remarkable ability to retain its international appeal even during challenging periods.

Dixon will now return to lead an organization he knows from the inside and helped transform over nearly two decades.

After representing the entire United States to travelers around the world through Brand USA, his next challenge will once again be one of the most recognizable destinations on the planet.

For Fred Dixon, December 1 will represent more than the beginning of another chapter in his career. In many ways, it will be a homecoming.
