SunnyNews recorrió el estadio antes del encuentro entre New York Liberty y Los Angeles Sparks: historia, sectores exclusivos, el calentamiento de las jugadoras y una noche de WNBA desde una suite en uno de los grandes templos deportivos de Nueva York.
NUEVA YORK.- Hay una Nueva York que se descubre caminando por sus calles, otra desde sus miradores y una tercera que late dentro de sus estadios. Y en Brooklyn, pocas experiencias permiten acercarse tanto a ese universo como ingresar al Barclays Center antes de que comience un partido.
SunnyNews fue invitado este jueves 13 de agosto a vivir la experiencia previa al encuentro de la WNBA entre las New York Liberty y Los Angeles Sparks, una noche que comenzó mucho antes del salto inicial y terminó con victoria del equipo local.
La propuesta fue realizar el Pre-Game Tour del Barclays Center, un recorrido que permite conocer el estadio cuando todavía se está preparando para recibir a miles de espectadores y descubrir qué sucede detrás de escena antes de un gran evento deportivo.
Un gigante en el corazón de Brooklyn
Ubicado en la intersección de Atlantic y Flatbush Avenue, el Barclays Center se convirtió desde su inauguración, el 28 de septiembre de 2012, en uno de los símbolos de la transformación de Brooklyn.
El estadio abrió oficialmente sus puertas con el primero de ocho conciertos consecutivos con entradas agotadas de Jay-Z, uno de los artistas más estrechamente vinculados culturalmente con Brooklyn.
Desde entonces pasaron por allí algunas de las mayores estrellas de la música mundial y grandes acontecimientos deportivos y culturales. Hoy es la casa de los Brooklyn Nets de la NBA y las New York Liberty de la WNBA, y dispone de 17.553 localidades en su configuración para básquet, mientras que puede recibir hasta unas 19.000 personas para determinados conciertos y espectáculos.
Es difícil separar al Barclays Center de Brooklyn. Su arquitectura, su ubicación sobre uno de los principales nodos de transporte de la ciudad y hasta numerosos detalles de su interior buscan reflejar la identidad de un borough que construyó una personalidad inconfundible dentro de Nueva York.
Brooklyn es además el más poblado de los cinco distritos de la ciudad y uno de sus grandes polos culturales, gastronómicos y artísticos. Y el Barclays se convirtió, en poco más de una década, en uno de sus grandes orgullos.
El estadio antes del estadio
Ahí está buena parte del atractivo del Pre-Game Tour. La experiencia dura aproximadamente 60 minutos y se realiza en fechas seleccionadas en las que hay partido. El recorrido permite caminar por diferentes sectores del Barclays Center antes de la apertura general, conocer historias y curiosidades de la arena y observar cómo se prepara para la noche.
Es una imagen completamente diferente de la que tendrá el visitante apenas un par de horas después.
Cuando las tribunas todavía están prácticamente vacías, el enorme videomarcador central ya está encendido, los trabajadores realizan los últimos ajustes y sobre el parquet comienza otra ceremonia: el calentamiento de las jugadoras.
Y entonces llega uno de los momentos más atractivos de la experiencia.
El calentamiento de las Liberty
El tour permite acercarse para observar el calentamiento previo de las jugadoras, una oportunidad para contemplar desde otra perspectiva la preparación de las estrellas de la WNBA antes de que las tribunas se llenen y comience la competencia.
SunnyNews pudo vivir esa previa antes del partido entre las Liberty y las Sparks. Poco después, el escenario cambió por completo.
Las gradas comenzaron a llenarse, las luces tomaron protagonismo, subió la música y aquel estadio casi silencioso que habíamos recorrido se transformó en una auténtica fiesta del básquet femenino estadounidense.
La experiencia continuó luego desde una de las suites del Barclays Center, con una vista panorámica privilegiada sobre el parquet y todos los servicios que acompañan a una de las formas más exclusivas de vivir un evento en la arena.
Una victoria con suspenso
El partido también tuvo emoción. Las New York Liberty derrotaron 85-81 a Los Angeles Sparks, aunque el resultado final no alcanza a describir una noche en la que las locales parecían tener el encuentro completamente controlado antes de una espectacular reacción de las visitantes.
Nueva York llegó a disponer de una ventaja de 28 puntos, pero Los Angeles protagonizó una formidable remontada durante el último cuarto y llegó a colocarse a solamente un punto en los segundos finales.
Las Liberty consiguieron resistir y aseguraron la victoria desde la línea de tiros libres, desatando el festejo de sus seguidores en Brooklyn.
Para quienes habían realizado previamente el tour, la transformación resultaba todavía más impactante: aquel escenario prácticamente vacío y silencioso de unas horas antes era ahora un estadio repleto y vibrante.
Mucho más que básquet
El Barclays Center es también uno de los grandes escenarios del entretenimiento estadounidense.
Por allí pasaron artistas como The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Madonna, Barbra Streisand y Bruce Springsteen, además de acontecimientos como los MTV Video Music Awards, ceremonias de ingreso al Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, el NBA All-Star Weekend y diferentes ediciones del NBA Draft.
También hay pequeños detalles que recuerdan permanentemente dónde estamos.
Los espacios gastronómicos, las referencias visuales al borough, los murales y sectores como el Brooklyn Boardwalk forman parte de una arena que intenta trasladar puertas adentro parte de la identidad de las calles que la rodean.
Porque quizá la mayor particularidad del estadio sea precisamente esa: el Barclays se siente profundamente Brooklyn.
Está integrado a un distrito que convirtió su diversidad, su música, su gastronomía, su arte urbano y sus barrios en una parte esencial de la identidad contemporánea de Nueva York.
Por eso entrar al estadio antes de un partido tiene algo especial. Durante una hora se puede observar el enorme engranaje que existe detrás de esas dos horas de espectáculo que después ve el público.
Primero, el Barclays vacío. Después, las jugadoras calentando. Más tarde, las luces, la música y miles de personas ocupando las tribunas.
Y finalmente, el partido. Una manera diferente de conocer uno de los orgullos de Brooklyn y comprobar que, en Nueva York, el espectáculo muchas veces comienza bastante antes de que empiece el juego.

Inside Barclays Center: The Pre-Game Tour That Takes You Behind the Scenes in Brooklyn

SunnyNews toured the arena before the New York Liberty vs. Los Angeles Sparks game, discovering its history and exclusive areas, watching the players warm up and experiencing a WNBA night from a suite at one of New York City’s great sports venues.
NEW YORK.- There is a New York you discover by walking its streets, another you experience from its observation decks, and a third that comes alive inside its sports arenas. And in Brooklyn, few experiences offer a closer look at that world than entering Barclays Center before a game begins.
SunnyNews was invited on Thursday, August 13, to experience the build-up to the WNBA game between the New York Liberty and Los Angeles Sparks, on a night that began long before tipoff and ended with a victory for the home team.
The experience started with the Barclays Center Pre-Game Tour, offering visitors the opportunity to explore the arena while it is still being prepared for thousands of fans and to discover what happens behind the scenes before a major sporting event.
A Brooklyn Landmark
Located at the intersection of Atlantic and Flatbush Avenues, Barclays Center has become one of the symbols of Brooklyn’s transformation since opening on September 28, 2012.
The arena officially opened with the first of eight consecutive sold-out concerts by Jay-Z, an artist whose career and identity are deeply connected to Brooklyn.
Since then, some of the world’s biggest music stars and major sporting and cultural events have passed through its doors.
Today, Barclays Center is home to the NBA’s Brooklyn Nets and the WNBA’s New York Liberty, with seating for 17,553 fans in its basketball configuration and capacity for approximately 19,000 people for certain concerts and entertainment events.
It is difficult to separate Barclays Center from Brooklyn itself. Its architecture, location above one of New York City’s major transportation hubs and numerous details throughout the building reflect the identity of a borough with an unmistakable personality.
Brooklyn is also the most populous of New York City’s five boroughs and one of its major cultural, culinary and artistic centers. In little more than a decade, Barclays Center has become one of its landmarks and sources of pride.
The Arena Before the Crowd Arrives
That is where much of the appeal of the Pre-Game Tour lies. The experience lasts approximately 60 minutes and is offered on selected game days. Visitors can explore different areas of Barclays Center before the general public enters, learn about the arena’s history and discover how everything is prepared for the night ahead.
It is a completely different image from the one visitors will see only a couple of hours later.
With the stands still almost empty, the enormous center-hung scoreboard is already glowing, staff members are completing their final preparations and another ritual begins down on the court: the players’ warm-up.
And that leads to one of the highlights of the experience.
Watching the Liberty Warm Up
The tour offers the opportunity to watch the players during their pre-game warm-up, providing a completely different perspective on how WNBA stars prepare before the stands fill and competition begins.
SunnyNews experienced that behind-the-scenes atmosphere ahead of the Liberty-Sparks matchup.
Shortly afterward, everything changed.
The seats began filling, the lights took over, the music grew louder and the almost silent arena we had just explored was transformed into a full-scale celebration of women’s basketball.
The experience then continued from one of Barclays Center’s suites, offering a privileged panoramic view of the court and the services that accompany one of the arena’s most exclusive ways of attending an event.
A Dramatic Liberty Victory
The game provided plenty of drama as well.
The New York Liberty defeated the Los Angeles Sparks 85-81, although the final score tells only part of the story.
New York built a lead of as many as 28 points and appeared to have the game completely under control before Los Angeles produced a remarkable fourth-quarter comeback.
The Sparks eventually pulled within just one point in the closing seconds, but the Liberty held on and secured the victory from the free-throw line, triggering celebrations throughout the Brooklyn arena.
For those who had taken the tour earlier, the transformation was particularly striking.
The almost empty and quiet venue we had explored just hours before was now packed with fans, music, lights and the energy of a WNBA game.
Much More Than Basketball
Barclays Center is also one of America’s major entertainment venues.
Artists including The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Madonna, Barbra Streisand and Bruce Springsteen have performed here, while the arena has hosted events including the MTV Video Music Awards, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremonies, NBA All-Star Weekend and several NBA Drafts.
There are also smaller details that constantly remind visitors exactly where they are.
Food areas, visual references to the borough, colorful murals and spaces such as the Brooklyn Boardwalk help bring some of the personality of the surrounding streets inside the arena.
Because perhaps the most distinctive thing about Barclays Center is precisely this: it feels unmistakably Brooklyn.
The arena belongs to a borough whose diversity, music, food, street art and neighborhoods have become an essential part of contemporary New York City’s identity.
That is why entering Barclays Center before a game feels different.
For about an hour, visitors can see the enormous operation behind the two hours of entertainment that spectators will eventually experience.
First, an almost empty Barclays Center. Then, the players warming up. Later, the lights, the music and thousands of fans filling the stands.
And finally, the game.
It is a different way to discover one of Brooklyn’s great landmarks — and a reminder that in New York, the show often begins long before the game does.
